How To
🍵 How to Make Milk Thistle Seed Tea
- 1–2 teaspoons of whole organic milk thistle seeds
- A mortar & pestle, clean coffee grinder, or spice grinder(optional but needed)
- A small pot or kettle
- A fine mesh strainer or tea infuser
- Milk thistle seeds have a tough outer shell that protects all the good stuff inside. To release their benefits, lightly crack or crush them before steeping.
- Mortar & Pestle: Place seeds in the bowl and press down with a twisting motion. You’re not trying to powder them—just crack the shells.
- Coffee or Spice Grinder: Pulse the seeds just once or twice. Avoid overgrinding—you want coarse bits, not a fine powder.
- No Tools? Place the seeds in a clean kitchen towel, fold it over, and give them a few firm presses with a rolling pin or the back of a spoon.
- Bring your water to a gentle boil. Place your crushed seeds in a teapot, mug, or infuser, and pour the hot water over them.
- Let it steep for 15–20 minutes to pull out the full range of nutrients and liver-supportive compounds.
- Strain out the seeds using a fine mesh strainer or remove the infuser.
- Add a little honey, lemon, or ginger if you'd like—and enjoy your cup of earthy, nourishing goodness!
🍵 How to Make a Milk Thistle Seed Decoction:
If you’re looking for maximum herbal power, a decoction is the way to go. Unlike a regular tea (which you steep), a decoction simmers the herb longer and deeper—perfect for tough ingredients like milk thistle seeds, which need extra time to release their full benefits.
- 1–2 tablespoons of crushed organic milk thistle seeds
- 2–3 cups of water (depending on how strong you want it)
- A saucepan or small pot with a lid
- A fine mesh strainer
- (Optional) Honey, lemon, or herbs like peppermint for flavor
- This step is key. Milk thistle seeds have a hard shell that needs to be cracked open for your body to absorb the good stuff—like silymarin, a compound known for supporting liver health and detox.
- Use a mortar & pestle and press/twist gently until seeds crack
- Or use a coffee/spice grinder, pulsing once or twice—don’t overgrind
- No tools? Wrap seeds in a clean towel and crush with the back of a spoon or rolling pin
- You’re aiming for coarse, broken pieces—not powder.
- Add the crushed seeds to your pot with water
- Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and cover
- Simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally
- The longer it simmers, the stronger and richer the decoction will be
- Once done, remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Strain out the seeds using a fine mesh strainer.
